BOHS P402 and UKAS: what do they mean?

A good asbestos survey rests on two things: a trained surveyor and an accredited laboratory. Here is what the letters mean in plain English.

BOHS P402

P402 is a BOHS qualification for people who survey buildings for asbestos and take bulk samples. A surveyor with P402 has been trained and examined on how to inspect, sample and report on asbestos-containing materials.

UKAS

UKAS is the national accreditation body. A UKAS-accredited laboratory is assessed for the quality of its sample analysis. Ask which laboratory analyses your samples.

Why it matters

If you are selling, refurbishing, managing a building or dealing with a school, you will often be asked for a report from a competent surveyor and an accredited lab.

What to ask for

Ask the surveyor for their qualification, the laboratory name and the report format before you book. A good surveyor answers without fuss.

How we use it

We introduce you to independent surveyors and contractors. Our partner surveyors work with P402-qualified staff and UKAS-accredited laboratories.
