Roof off, roof on

One scaffold. Old roof out, new roof on, solar on top.

Tap through the stages. Removal on its own is always an option. The new roof and the solar panels are quoted separately.

Old asbestos cement roof

Cracked, mossy sheets on a 1960s sectional garage. Do not drill, scrub or power-wash it.

Controlled removal

Operatives in coveralls and respirators unfix sheets whole, lower them by hand and double-wrap them on polythene.

New corrugated steel roof

The same garage with a deeply corrugated insulated steel roof, fitted while the scaffold is still up.

Solar panels on top

Once the roof is new, panels can go on it. Any battery stays inside the garage.

FAQ

Questions people ask first

Is asbestos dangerous if I leave it alone?

Undamaged asbestos cement is generally low risk. The danger is dust released when it is drilled, sanded, broken or power-washed. If it is cracked, crumbling or mossy, get it looked at rather than disturbing it yourself.

How do I know if something is asbestos?

You cannot tell by eye. Roofs, ceilings, pipe lagging and floor tiles in buildings from before about 2000 may contain it. A sample tested by a laboratory is the only reliable answer.

Can I remove it myself?

We do not recommend it. Breaking or dropping sheets releases fibres, and the waste must be double-wrapped, labelled and taken to a permitted site. Read the HSE guidance first, or get a quote from a trained contractor.

Does it need a licensed contractor?

Asbestos cement roofs are generally non-licensed work. Higher-risk materials such as lagging, sprayed coatings or insulating board generally need a licence. Your quote will say which applies.

Do I have to have a new roof fitted?

No. The old roof can be removed on its own, or removed and replaced in one job. Many people choose a new roof straight away because the scaffold is already up.

What happens to the waste?

It is wetted, double-wrapped, labelled and taken to a permitted site by a registered carrier. You should receive waste transfer paperwork.

What should I check before hiring someone?

Ask to see their waste carrier registration, insurance and a method statement. For higher-risk work, ask for their asbestos licence. A good contractor provides these without fuss.

Are you the contractor?

No. We are an introduction service. We pass your enquiry to an independent local contractor, who provides the quote and does the work. See our terms for details.

What do BOHS P402 and UKAS mean?

P402 is a qualification for asbestos surveyors. UKAS is the accreditation body for laboratories. Our partner surveyors use P402-qualified staff and UKAS-accredited laboratories.

How quickly will I get a survey report?

Partner surveyors aim to send reports within 24 to 48 hours of sampling, depending on the laboratory.

Can you fit a new roof and solar panels after the asbestos comes off?

Yes, as optional extras. Tell us when you enquire and the contractor quotes each stage separately.
