Solar panels on a garage roof after asbestos removal

The tidy way to get solar on an old garage is to replace the roof first. One project, one scaffold, and nothing is fixed to asbestos.

Why remove the roof first

Panels need secure fixings and a roof that will last. Old asbestos cement is fragile and cannot take them without breaking.

Which roof

A deeply corrugated insulated steel roof is quick to fit and works well with panel mounting rails. Ask the installer which profile they prefer.

Direction and shading

A south or west facing pitch, with little shade, gives the best yield. The installer checks this from photos or a visit.

Cables and battery

The cable route to the house and the consumer unit affects cost. If you add a battery, keep it inside the garage, not mounted outside.
